A Newbie’s Guide on Weapons

By –AdmiralOmega-, now reborn as CaptainOmega on the Aerilon Server

This is a guide to general awesomeness.

I achieve that, you need a good ship first. Presuming you already got a Raptor / Heavy Raider from my first post, you now need to outfit your ship with weapons.

Guns. Guns. Any random drone, wingman or enemy has got one. Should you get one?Possibly.

Pros:

Guns are good for engaging close, fast moving targets such as in PVP. They are less effective against larger ships and platforms. Ammo is generally cheap (HE rounds).

Cons:

You have to KEEP TURNING and stuff to keep your target in your gun’s sights. You need to CHASE the target. You can be outmaneuvered and they can shoot back at you. You can just pray that the guns are going to chew on the health of the enemy before you get destroyed. Also, guns can miss.

Missiles. Most players and NPCs don’t even use missiles, but they are effective sometimes.

Pros:

They have long range (can hit outpost out of the outpost’s range with upgrades) and they usually never miss, because they are homing. VERY ANNOYING (ie. Beep beep beep beep!!!! ARGH!!!!). You don’t need to turn so often because they only launch every 10 seconds (fire and forget). High damage and good against large things overall.

Cons:

The ammo costs a lot. Pesky strikes can dodge / outrun them, or gun them down. Larger vessels have dedicated defenses called point blank defense guns, but you can almost always shoot faster then they kick in. Need a while before they actually hit the target. They can only fire at 200+, so you need to slow down or move to shoot. Bad news for big ships because it is SO EASY to get close and then you can’t shoot missiles anymore. Also, pesky strike will simply stop right in front of you and while you can’t shoot they somehow have 5 guns and you get pwned in 5 seconds. Also, people have flares, but you can shoot faster then they recharge.

Mining Cannons?

They are simply ammo-less cannons that shoot 5-6 times as powerful when targeting a rock. Sucks against actual enemies, but amazingly, some high level players upgrade them so much that they are actually effective against enemy ships, and saving A LOT of money buying ammo.

Mines?

They need some time to set up, but causes significant damage. Ammo is expensive, and ships can shoot you at long range, away from the mines.

Point blank and flak

I haven’t actually used them before, and they usually only shield OPs from missiles attacks. Flak is only a support weapon, and usually they only use them against strikes, because their guns are missing like crazy. WARNING. THEY WILL NOT KILL STRIKES FAST. They are only support weapons and they damage strikes and stuff, but you will need your main guns sooner or later.

Final Verdict:

Short range weapons = good for strikes + PVC

Mid range weapons + missiles = good for escorts

Long range weapons = good for lines + PVP

Thank you. The end.
